I'm not sure it was a protection thing (but I didn't read all of the press, it was too stupid, so that may have been in there too) but a level playing field thing. Just as there are different levels of little league (minors, A, AA, Majors) for kids of different skill levels, we do that later in life with other sports, Age and Skill level. Why? So that we can have a competitive game. Just like it's no fun getting waxed as an adult playing your favorite sport, it's no fun as a kid getting waxed while trying to decide if you even *want* to continue this sport.
I liked to play touch football with my buddies while going to college, but I did make the mistake of taking a PE class in flag football... someone should have told me it was where all of the highschool football players that didn't make it at the next level went...
