Actually that's inaccurate.
You can play in the in Little League at ages 9,10,11,12 in the following way. Little League has a Minors and a Majors and you can play in the Majors at age 10, 11, or 12. You are selected by coaches on your abilities to the Majors. All remaining play in the Minors. You can play in the Minors at 9,10,11,12 however IF the child is 12 in the minors THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PITCH. Gee, preventing a child that is most likely further along physically from pitching, (my best Craig Ferguson voice) "remind you of anyone?"
Before the end of the season there are two "All-Stars" teams selected, by the coaches, a Majors and a Minors. You may only be 11 or 12 on the Majors, and 9 or 10 on the Minors. The Majors team is the one in the United States Bracket for the Little League World Series, meaning the 9 & 10 don't go.
Umm, these are Little League rules, the same Little League you watched the World Series of that the Team from Hawaii just won.
There is another organization, PONY, and they have Bronco, and Mustang, and Colt for high school age, and there are many differences (they get to lead off from base unlike Little League) and I don't know much more about them, It seems like your neighborhood norms are where you play, Little League was the one here (our league as at the LLWS a several years ago, remember the 14 or 16 yo that was found out? They beat our team before that was discovered and we ended up third, all in all a great accomplishment. I coached Aaron Kim in minor B's several years before that - he was the guy that came in and hit home runs, who knew back then?).
Wasabi, again I stress that this youth league, and at this age bracket, is INSTRUCTIONAL in the game, and NOT PROFESSIONAL. That is where you are missing the mark. It's an indroduction to the sport, the skills, a sip of what it's like.
Someone else posted that the real reason for the uproar was that the kid didn't get to play and someone else that came later did. If this is True (don't know) THIS would explain alot of the press this is getting, and I've seen it several times, and I've seen coaches go around the system too. It's too bad all around.
I hope by the time you have your kids this will all be different, but you viewpoint may change too.
