Good day - rode in a Turbo X and a Lotus Elise Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Sat, 6 Sep 2008 18:55:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Had a track day at Gingerman Raceway in Michigan today. The first session of the day was a low speed ride round the track in instructors' cars and when I saw a Turbo X at the front of the grid I jumped in. It was a nice ride - and the instructor's definition of low speed was not quite like mine!
Anyway, my 9k with its newly acquired SAS swaybars acquitted itself nicely on the track. One instructor commented that he was surprised how well it handled and how tight it felt - not bad for a 13 year old car with 157k on the clock! That same instructor later gave me a ride in his Elise - it was incredibly scary but a lot of fun. It made me realize just how slowly I'd been going in my 9k. And some of the corners we went round I couldn't believe it was physically possible to go that fast and stay on the track.
The only downside was I pretty much shredded my front left tire - marble sized chunks of rubber are missing from the outside edge. I have Kumho Ecsta ASX's, which have always been a good street tire for me, but they don't seem to hold up to road racing too well. It seems like it's time to move to something a little more well suited for that. Any suggestions would be well received. Would it make much difference going to a 55 or 50 sidewall from the stock 205/60R15's? How about "borrowing" the 16" wheels from my wife's 98 9k and putting tires on there - would that make any noticeable difference?
