When we had our basement finished in our ~1926 house, we wanted to match the original wood windows as best we could. We went with Pella windows and couldn't be happier. They were an impressive match both outside and inside. I personally feel that they look original to the house.
The previous owner had replaced the back windows with vinyl windows. For the basement egress window we chose the Pella composite window. It's Pella's version of the vinyl window. The guy doing our work insisted these were the best way to go if you need/want vinyl. The composite doesn't warp like vinyl so they install easier and hold up much, much better.
So if you can afford it, check out the wood windows. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how close they can get them to the original. If you go with vinyl, definitely check out the Pella composite.
