This old house (circa 1930) has the original wood windows (with aluminum storms) with a little rot starting to show on the sills and frames. So I need to do something. You folks at Saabnet always seem to have good thoughts, so I thought I would seek some second opinions.
The cheapest option is to patch things up, which would also allow me to maintain the character of the old windows, but they're still going to be old windows with leaks and rattles and maintenance. Cost, about $5K.
At about 3x the price, I could go to top-of-the-line vinyl. Good efficiency and OK looks, but would it wreck the character of the old place? Or for 4x the fix up price, I could go with new wood, but now we're talking big bucks and the new wood still doesn't have the detail and character of the old.
Details: windows are painted inside; I plan to be in the house 3 to 5 years; I paid about $60/sqft 11 years ago and new houses go for about $110/sqft in this market.
OK, I'm just pondering. If you have any thoughts, just throw them out there.
