what is important to you. OKSaabs is in 80-year old house so "historical" issues may not apply except to his own sense of aesthetics.
Some communities have rules regarding older homes that may have to be considered. I live in a town with a historic district where it's OK to put storm windows on a house but not replace the old windows with anything remotely modern. Probably not an issue for an 80-year old house, though.
If there aren't any local rules, it also depends on the house. There are plenty of houses where putting in modern windows isn't going to matter because changes over time have already eradicated original architectural features. My last house, built in 1919, had old windows and storms, but the old windows were nothing special. I didn't do windows in that house, but going to a more modern window--assuming the size was the same-- would not have detracted from the house or its value.
IMHO, there's nothing wrong with modern windows from reputable companies.
