Well, the car companies figured it out a long time ago, but customers didn't want 4 cylinder turbos in places where fuel was cheap, like the U.S. Part of that blame goes to the automakers for advertising that more cylinders and bigger is better. But that mentality is also part of our culture.
I find it funny that the loan is called a bail-out. When one buys a home and gets a mortgage, is it called a bail-out? I know we're talking about government supporting industry in a capitalist democracy, but many similar governments support their essential industries. I consider the auto industry to be one of those. Without heavy industry, our economy will falter and we will be less secure in case of a major war.
