JG, sorry ur dog took a spill. The key question to ask your veterinarian is, does *your* dog *need* his acl for stability, given his age/probably not quite puppy-level of rambunctiousness these days. I don't know the answer as to dogs; for humans, if you are not into cutting-action sports, you do not *need* an acl, particularly if up in years. I have a sergeant major who runs everyday without an acl, for example. These individuals may well forgo repair. But, admittedly, dog mechanics may differ enough that the analogy doesn't work, i don't know - but that's how I'd pose the question to your vet or other vet consultant.
Regards
fam med saaber
p.s. guess i fogot to say, if the vet cannot say "dog mechanics are such that even an older, quieter dog's knee will be unstable without an acl, period," then only in that case would i reasonably expect him to have pain after the present inflammation subsides, if no repair was done. i'm picturing a golden with ice taped to his knee, lol - sorry, poor little guy. Good luck with him.
