Thanks for the all the info . Around 1975 I bought my 1st decent road bike - a Viscount Aerospace - it was an early aluminum frame - made in England by Trusty with Shimano Titlelist equipment . I rode that bike for 20 some years racking up probably 25k miles or more - and you know what - replaced the rear wheel once after an accident, the derauilliers are all original - replaced the freewheel gear sets several times, the front sprockets once. Rode at 170 lbs vs 190 lbs today. Althought the equipment is lighter today and things like shifters have improved - I think long term durability hasn't, at least in the bike I ride now.
I think your advice about thin tires makes sense and I didn't know there was a tool to tension the spokes at the proper torque - that's a tool I'll invest in as I spend a fair amount of time trueing wheels on both my road bike and mountain bike - but I sure appreciate the double rim of mountain bike - it can take a lot of punishment.
Thanks for the advice. If I recall you also live in the Denver area - in the 80s I would ride daily to work from Kipling and Jewell to Kipling and 64th . I rode the route this year - once - would never ride it again, the traffic is brutal and the drivers so much more aggressive to bike riders.
Well I pick up my new Mavic wheel tomorrow, enjoy the custom frame - carbon fiber ?
