hi Jeff - we don't like dogs - so we've had a cat for 12 yrs . My wife has asthma and is allergic to the cat. However a cat by nature will give off a good deal of particles into the air from cleaning it's coat - cat dander.
So about 8 yrs ago my wife's allergies began pretty bad. We bought a couple of HEPA Honeywell air filters - these helped somewhat. Five yrs ago we started bathing the cat every other week during the period when our windows are closed. Three yrs back we had our air ducts cleaned. Two years ago we bought a Dyson vacumm cleaner.
All these steps have resulted in pretty good allergy control.
Since your cat is new - I would recommend that if you have forced air heat you find a way to install filters on the cold air return ducts if that is possible, this keeps dander build up from entering the air ducts where it accumulates. Then bathe the cat if you are up to the task. Big difference before and after a bath - the oily feel from the dander is removed. An air filter might help as well.
we do this because we enjoy the cat - and we don't like dogs, although much of the population in the USA is dog crazy, dogs get excessive attention in the media, and many people value their dogs more than their fellow humans.
