meeting, exceeding or adhering to some of these alphanumeric soup specs really is. I don't have the time or inclination to study the details of the oils, the specs, learn the testing routines or any of the science.
If the oil meets or exceeds ACEA A3/B3 and API SL/SM specs isn't it OK? Moreover, how much of the specifying is real, how much is marketing hype, how much is the auto makers looking for an excuse not to pay a claim because the wrong oil was used? Can be kinda had to tell.
I've been using Mobil 1 0W40 in the 9-5 and Castrol 5W50 in both my 9Ks, changing every 5000 miles in the 9-5 and at 6K to 7500K in the 9000s. These oils exceed ACEA A3/B3 and API SM specs, plus some other specs. And short of tearing down the engine (or pulling the pan in the 9-5) it's hard to say whether this is bad or good.
