The biggest issue that you will run into is that it's somewhat annoying to get a PC to run in 1080i mode, and when you do, the GUI looks terrible. My guess is that your DLP has a native resolution of 1280x720, so you'll want to be running your PC in that res, giving you a 720p picture instead.
My parents have a 5 year old Samsung 46" DLP and I set them up with a Vista Home Premium machine running 720p and it looks great. Running at 1080i resulted in an unreadable GUI, although Media Center still looked fine.
If you're set on 1080i, some (most modern) video cards from ATI and Nvidia allow you to force display modes such as 1080i via DVI through the driver. With the price of these cards ($50 or less) I'd go that route. A lot easier than hacking firmware, or going component. If you decide to go component, you can buy inexpensive DVI->Component converters that allow you to set the output resolution. I picked one up from http://www.cyberguys.com a while back for $25 or so for a client, in a similar situation as you and really set on maximizing his TV.
*Personally*, I'd go 720p. Unless you're sitting a couple feet from the TV, you probably won't notice much difference, and IMHO "P" always looks better than "I".
