My 1963 Model 96, I thought, had the ignition/starter switch on the dash board. 3 cylinder, two cycle engine, not from a British Ford. Mine had three on the tree.
Keys did not move to the steering column for any make of automobile until the US federal gov't issued safety regulations designed to slow down auto theft. The model 99, if memory serves, had the key moved to the transmission hump as a manner of locking the transmission as a deterrent to theft. Just a different thing to lock as opposed to the steering column. I am not sure what they did to the last of the Model 96's, perhaps that key went to the steering column towards the end of the run.
