Actually it is a lap top. As to what went wrong, who knows? Sometimes computers just plain get a bug up their a** for some reason that no one really ever figures out. I used to run a company that did CG 3D animation--we used to do dimensionally accurate virtual prototypes from CAD files. So I've worked with people who know a lot about computers. I don't think anyone truly knows everything there is to know. There are a lot of people who know a lot, but no one knows it all. Personally I think computer chips may be some sort of alien technology--we know how make and use them but we don't entirely understand them. There seems to be an element to the way they operate that isn't covered by logic--while it would seem they are the essense of logic, they sometimes behave in ways that defy logic and no one seems to know why.
