Other than being easier to use and more stable, Macs seem much more durable than PC laptops, IMHO.
You have Dells that are ten years old (which means they are relatively useless these days for other than basic uses). But how much do you use them? Most of my business colleagues seem to go thru Dells and others every couple years of daily biz use. They are cheap because they are kinda disposable. The ones that really hold up --some of my scientist friends use them-- seem to cost about as much as an equivalent Mac.
I'm on a Mac laptop 10 hours a day, at least 5 days a week and travel with them internationally. I run them hard, too, with graphic design work and video editing as well as the usual MS Office stuff and web use. I change machines every 2-3 years, passing the older ones to a family member who use them 3-4 hours a day for another 2-3 years or until they need something like a hard drive or the OS can't be upgraded. Even then they still work OK, unless a drive is bad. All we ever replace is batteries. They are rock solid machines. I think this stability and reliability over time is one of the greatest attributes of the Mac.
I usually buy the factory refurbs, too, and the AppleCare plans take care of anything that does come up. My daughter dropped her Macbook and killed the drive and Apple gave her a new drive, no questions asked. Not bad.
