I'm looking for the Saabnet collective wisdom on many things! My neighbor just had to replace her gas hot water heater to the tune of $1300 (predatory pricing in my estimation), so I'm reminded to take care of the sacrificial anode on mine. I have a Rheem 41V50 50-gallon gas hot water heater, and it works fine. The serial number is #RHNG 09991 19381, so I assume that it was manufactured in 1999 (either week 09 or September) and was probably installed soon after that; we bought the house in 2001. We have city water from Lake Michigan, so it's not particularly high in minerals.

I have never serviced/replaced the sacrificial anode on this unit. However, even if I wanted to, it might be a large undertaking as the ceiling directly above has only 25 inches of clearance (in the basement of an old house with a low-ceiling basement), and from what I see on the web the anode is 42 inches long (see link). Even if I punched hole in the plaster ceiling above the unit, this would add only another 10.5 inches, so 35.5 inches total clearance - still too short. The plumbing is copper pipe soldered in place, so it will not be easy to tilt/move the unit.

Does anyone know if the anode can come out at an angle once it is unscrewed (vs. having to be pulled straight up)? Is there a "hinge" or bendable part in the middle? This would be the easiest solution, although there is still the tangle of pipes directly above to deal with (old house, hot water heating). If not, I suppose that I could unscrew the anode, pull it up 25 inches, cut it in half (which may be very easy if it is doing its job and has decayed), pull out the rest - then replace it with a cut-off piece of a new anode (better than nothing)? Or should I just rejoice that the hot water heater has lasted ten years and wait for it to start leaking and replace as necessary?
