yeah, finding a *good* indy is critical. In some sense, finding a good mechanic with an open mind (ie able to see the good rather than "it's not a Chev") is probably more important than finding a Saab specialist... at least on the older cars.
We're lucky to have a good saab indy (and he too has horror stories of diy jobs he's fixed). I take most major stuff there (since you mention it, recently had them do a crank seal on a c900 - completely worth it to me! quick, easy, inexpensive)... but stupid/easy things (eg turn signal wands, electronics) I do myself...
For people in remote areas, a long way from a dealer or saab indy, it's getting harder to fix the new cars: so much technology. When we burnt a valve in a c900 a few years ago (in the boonies), I was able to get it back up + running with my parents' non-saab indy... he had an open mind, found it an interesting challenge, + did a great job (verified by our saab indy when we got back). Finding good people is key...
James...
