I had a VW Beetle on which I could set the timing with a 12V bulb, two lengths of wire and alligator clips. Distributors, points and condensers, plug wires. I always had spares and tools in the trunk.
On VWs, you had to adjust valves every 3K miles on a cold engine and they would still, sooner or later, burn the #3 exhaust valve which would make a lovely hole in the piston when it broke off. Rebuilt an engine in my dorm at college when that happened.
The mechanical longevity of modern cars is great, but I absolutely hate the dependence on electronics. What I love on my 9K is that while they do have their share of electrical issues, they are not electronic. Most modern cars are too dependent on high tech and when things go south, like on Bill's brother's Bimmer, the cars that are thought to be so cool now will be throwaways.
