I'm on my fourth Saab- a 2003 9-5 with 155k on it- and found I had become a bit inured to its specialness. That became clear to me after buying a new BMW 650i three months ago. The Bimmer is a nice car, but the thoughtful elegance and simplicity of the 9-5 has once again become obvious.
The Saab has done a wonderful job of keeping the driver's attention on driving: the seats with an upright position & superb view of the car's corners; simple, effective controls for the radio, HVAC etc that take near zero attention from the road; fast when you need it- I find no use to be the first across the crosswalk nor spend little time at 6500 RPM; I can still fix lots of things myself.
The Bimmer? I can't see the Start button or the steering wheel heater switch et al from the driving position. Distraction from the iDrive is a potential killer. The owner's manual does not fit in the glove box.
I love driving the Bimmer but the thoughtfulness of the Saab design (even 13 years old) has become obvious again.
