With the exception of the V6s in the 9000 and NG900, and probably the diesels, Saab really re-worked the motors that went into the 9-3, and presumably, the new 9-5. They even did their magic to the V6 in the OG 9-5.
But we must remember that Saab has had a LONG history of using motors from outside sources! Early 92s came with a DKW motor, we all know about the Ford V4 in the 95/96 family, and there was the brief dalliance with Triumph in the early years of the 99. And I can't seem to have heard ANY complaints from the NG 9-3 folks about their motors, being members of the GM "Ecotec II" (4) and "High Feature" (V6) engine families.
So long as Saab is able to tweak the motors to be "saabish", and noy just plop in crate engines, it really doesn't matter where the mill that's under the hood started life at on the drawing board...
