Aero has somewhat higher performance but is really just a top of the line model.
BMW's M-series has been a serious performance model that's (mostly) been a big leap above the regular 3- or 5- series cars. Read the specs and you see there are some major differences in the engine, driveline, suspension, etc. The current 5-series comes in 6 cyl and 8-cyl flavors, but the M is a V-10. I'm not sure, but I think the M-3 has a V8 instead of a 6 cyl.
It's sorta like the Gran Sport is the Aero version of the base Corvette, versus the the Z06 and the ZR-1.
Saab could do the same thing, but it takes a lot of resources and Saab is not yet at the point where it makes sense.
Just sayin'...
