The mention was in the quote I copied and pasted, and didn't notice. Here's the original post with the offender's name removed.
Based on some quick research, I found this:
"In 1929, Dr. Eckener was offered the opportunity to use helium, but because it was extremely expensive, and he did not have any facilities to hold or transport helium, he decided against it. By the time he needed it (after the disaster for building the LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin), it was too late to get any helium, for the U.S. had since banned any export of helium to Germany in concern that ***** might use it for military purposes."
Note that the Hindenburg disaster occurred May 6, 1937, while the building of the above mentioned ship began in 1938. The reason the Hindenburg did not use helium was cost; the embargo came after the decision had been made.
Here's another interesting titbit:
"One note is that in 1935 a helium filled blimp with an acetate aluminium skin burned near Point Sur in California with equal ferocity."
So helium may not have been the safe alternative we might now assume.
