Yeah, definitely also some lack of skill going on there..
New studded winter tires are best on ice, but modern non-studded winter tires aren't far behind. I've driven on smooth ice under snow plenty during the last month, and yes you can still slip, but it's controlled and definitely not impossible to move or stop.
And when it comes to partly worn tires, new research shows non-studded are actually better - even on ice...
