Based on the clarification you made in your last post (below) a Saab probably isn't the answer for the folks you're describing. They should be looking at Asian or domestics--something they can get parts off the shelf at Advanced or AutoZone or get fixed at a local garage.

The problem is this:
Reliable Saabs are ones that are consistently maintained. And not all are. A college student or someone with an entry-level job is likely to be buying a Saab that is pretty well used, may have a sketchy past and could be facing some pricey repairs. Some may be those "once in the life of the car" things, but they are still expensive and not every mechanic can work on a Saab. IMHO, the ability to DIY or having the wallet to pay for service is a requirement with a Saab or other European car, simply because they need a more attention than domestics or Asian cars, especially as they age.

However.... our daughters both have Saabs, bought from people we know and with known service histories. The '95 9000 CS got one kid all they way through college with very few issues beyond normal maintenance. I'd just do stuff 2-3X a year when she was home. The '99 9-3 is still at home with the second kid (may be about to change) and I just do things as needed.

But as the kids are further away from home I'm thinking that Saabs, as well-maintained as ours are, are not the best cars for people on a budget. There's a lot to be said for cars with lower service needs.
