I know that leather seats usually cost $1000-2000 to buyers of cars, but do they actually cost substantially more than good quality cloth material to the manufacturer? especially "bonded leather"? BMW is doing very well with its base "pleather." I'd think, in order to Saab to stay competitive, it has to offer seating material that looks like "leather" at the lowest rung. Even most Accords, Camries and even minivans are sold with "leather" seating nowadays.
Agree with your thesis that Saab's primary competitive target should be the likes of Acura, VW, perhaps some audi models and the likes of Lexus ES. The entry-level luxury is where the volume and profit is anyway even for the big-3 among luxury brands.
Saab's ability to sell some left-over 2010 9-5 Aero's in the sub-$40k price range as it is doing right now is a real eye-opener for the potential of the company. Even if they have to put some demo miles on all of them to get people in the door and get them to leave with a slightly "used" car at a sub-$40k price, it's the hands-down best deal among all luxury brands for a car that size. An Acura TL AWD costs more than that, and it smells of a $30k car. The key is to come up with ways of giving buyers a lower cost of ownership without cheapening the car.
