If you find a car that you like with a known history and the price is right, age is not that big a deal. In April I bought a '96 9000 with 148K on it. I know the PO, have the history, and the car was in very good condition. Since then I've replaced the exhaust (which was 4 years old) and it needs front control arm bushings. That's it. Got it for a lower than market price so am way ahead of the game.
My daughter's '99 SE we got at similar mileage two years ago. Knew that PO, too, and have a full history. Has needed very little since then. Spending $3500 on it, and maybe $300 since then other than normal maintenance. Compared to buying her a chunk of Asian tin, we are way ahead on that, too.
OK, I do 90% of my own wrenching, so it's easier to say yes to something older, and I could care less what anyone else thinks about my choice of cars. And we tend to run all our cars until they die, so it's a waste of money to buy something newer just for the sake of having something newer.
