I mostly buy stuff I need, or to replace stuff that's used up. When I buy something, I look what's of value to me. For instance, I'll spend more for skis because the higher-end models make a big difference. On the other hand, the most exotic home theater system is worth maybe $500 to me. Just don't care.
But the car that gets me to the mountain (and everywhere else) is really just transportation. I want a certain level of performance, fun, comfort, handling, utility, etc. I could get most of it out of several cars, but it's not something I'll pay a lot for, since I can get it pretty affordably in our fleet of Saabs.
But cars have long been status symbols for many people. There are lots of BMW and Porsche drivers who are not car enthusiasts. They want the halo effect of the brand. They are compensating, showing off, whatever. And are a marketer's dream.
