I was backing out of a perpendicular parking spot. The front of my car was roughly clear of the back of the parked cars. I had turned to be about 40 degrees from perpendicular. A person in an SUV pulled out from the row behind and a spot adjacent to the one just behind me. I stopped as there was nowhere to go (pulling in at this point would be worse and create a partial sideswipe and there was no chance to pull out). I honked enough to get seemingly everyone’s’ attention, but the other driver kept going and hit the door/mirror and compressed that cars plastic bumper while moving as far down as the front fender/wheel well. She says she didn’t hear my horn and says I hit her. There is a witness who says I was not moving and he heard the horn. I can’t tell at night if the paint can be buffed and will be ok. There’s certainly some denting. Some of the denting might be across the beltline crease, which might be harder to get out. The other car has no real damage and at most needs the bumper painted if it can’t be buffed. The person claims it was just repainted (wonder why) which could be as there is plenty of paint that got left on my car.
The officer suggested not reporting it and waiting until I get an estimate because reports now go to the state and might affect insurance rates. I have no experience with accidents so I’m wondering what others suggest.
A bystander says if I hit the rear, I’m at fault. I don’t see how that can be when the other car’s rear hit the front side of my car that wasn’t moving. Another person says that if it is under $1,000, insurers don’t hold it against you.
It’s probably not going to be worth reporting it to insurance as I have a $1,000 deductible and would like to keep my clean record, but I’ll see how cooperative this other person will be and what this is going to cost. Why this 2009 Jeep doesn’t have a rear camera or backup sensors is beyond me? People must run into all sorts of things backing up SUVs. Cameras should be standard equipment at this point.
