While electric motors are indeed an old technology, like the IC engine they have benefited from a lot of development over the years.
You probably wouldn't enjoy much owning a car powered by an electric motor from 100 years ago, with its wear-prone brushes, inefficient design, and limited speed range (bearing technology wasn't all that great then either).
The real magic that allows modern electric motors to be useful over a wide range of speeds is solid-state electronic drive systems, which are a relatively recent invention.
That's not to say the same hasn't occurred with IC engines, as I was reminded yesterday when a coworker brought in a 1912 stationary engine that weighs ~400 pounds, displaces about a liter, and makes a whopping 2.5 horsepower! Although to be fair, that engine wasn't state-of-the-art even in 1912.
