I agree with the others. Changes in 7 are mostly evolutionary + since this is a laptop, you should not have hardware issues for the most part. XP is not going to be supported soon and, like Justin said, is probably a huge liability if you use the machine on the net. I have found the loss of menu bars a bit of an annoyance for the way I work, but that is seemingly a trend going forward (and has been slowly transitioning for some time now).
I do find XP much faster and more lightweight than 7 (though 7 is better in that regard than Vista) and, partly for that reason, I do have a machine running XP still (ok, I'll admit to being a bit of a luddite: I also have 2 older PCs running '98se). I have absolutely no networking connection on those machines though - they have specific purposes that don't require that...
