I just happened to see this over on the AMC bulletin board and was impressed with the level of sheer destruction, it's something you rarely see detailed photos of.
From what I gather reading the comments there the cause is not known for certain yet. The prevailing opinion seems to be that the crank broke at high speed and thrashed the living daylights out of everything around it. It may have been due to a flaw in the crank, or possibly a crack in the block grew to the point where the crank was not properly anchored. Some possibility that the crank damper failed, permitting excessive vibration and stress to build up. That connecting rod twisted practically into a pretzel is particularly impressive!
