Could also be something as innocuous as a loose band clamp on the low pressure side hose, allowing air to get sucked into the system. I'm not familiar with Lincolns, but many cars use crimped-on clamps for the hoses, and as the rubber ages and shrinks, the clamps "loosen up" relative to the shrunken hose. Check if the hoses feel loose; if so, this is easily fixed by replacement with a real band clamp (did this on my Audi A4).
