I'm somewhat surprised that VW/Audi hasn't worked out the "build it better vs. fix it under warranty" equation, meaning that it has to cost them hundreds of dollars for a repair that could have been averted by using higher quality valve stem seals. One would think that some very high quality, heat resistant synthetic silicone/rubber compounds exist. On the other hand, maybe they have and the extra cost of 30 better valve stem seals per car on every V6 engine produced might be a deterrent, especially if very few people bother making a claim.
As Noel said, this isn't a new issue for them. I've had five Audis and a few of them have been oil burners, starting especially with my 1973 100LS. Now that my A6 is sorted out (new valve gaskets and cam tensioner seals) its oil loss is down to reasonable levels, but not as good as my SAAB with 200,000+ miles on it.
