Modern cars are definitely safer, faster, better handling, and in some cases more comfortable than those of 10-20 years ago. They are generally more reliable, too. So in many ways they are better.
But that seems to come with the requirement to have highly trained techs and proprietary computer interfaces work on them, which takes the control from those of us who prefer to do as much of our own work as possible and makes diagnosis more complex and servicing more expensive.
I also don't trust all the fancy technology to be durable in the long term. My '96 9K just hit 200K miles and is running fine with no major work other than a clutch at 183K. It has only one computer that's critical to operation. I somehow don't envision there being a many 2013 cars with 200K on them around in 2030. The unibody on the 2013 cars may still be OK when they are 17 years old and at 200K, but I think the driveline and electronics will go south before then and make many of them scrap metal, unless some cost effective ways to replace electronics come to market.
I value durability very highly and tend to buy quality products that will hold up for a long period. I just don't think that's an option with a lot of modern cars. Any car can go 100K or even 150K if it's serviced properly, but can it do the years, especially in areas with hostile (winter) environments? And how many of the car's computers will still be working at 15+ years old?
There are some interesting cars out there these days. But many are just appliances because that's what people seem to want. I just don't see many that I want to make payments on.
