I am wondering if anyone here has done this and how they accomplished such a task.
I am considering private purchase of a classic car from the owner who lives in Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada. Lots of stuff to consider with such a purchase; Taxes, Customs, Duties, Pre-purchase Inspection, and safe transport to Michigan.
I have a friend who is a Customs Broker (commercial only) who can guide me through many steps although his firm does not handle consumer purchases. These fees appear to total ~$500.
There are Pre-purchase Inspection Companies who work in both the US and Canada and fees for this service cost ~$400, which is cheaper (and probably more knowledgeable) than me going to look at the car in person.
The surprising kicker appears to be the transport to the US. On-line quote requests for this service go unanswered. I will be sending direct requests for quotations to three big US firms for this service (Intercity, Passport, and Reliable) and a specialty firm (US Canada Auto Transport) which may be only a broker offering gigs to little guys.
A big Canadian trucking company, Mackie, who covers the length of Canada (offices in Montreal to Vancouver) and who has a special auto transport division, notified me that they do not send their trucks into Eastern Canada. What!?! Montreal is almost there as Quebec and New Brunswick share a long border!
I am also waiting to hear from the New Brunswick Ministry of Finance regarding their Provincial Vehicle Tax (flat 13%) and whether it must be paid if the car is not registered in New Brunswick after sale, and if this tax is recoverable if it must be paid and the car is re-registered in Michigan within 30 days. (Les H. - You remember this mess I am sure).
But back to my original question. Has anyone exported a used car from Canada's Atlantic Provinces into the US, and what transport company did you use?
Thanks,
