The good news is that such a purchase and transport arranged by an individual is possible. The bad news is the Fees make such a purchase practical only for a true exotic or ultra rare vehicle.
$500 - Duty Fee, Merchandise Processing Fee and Entry Fee
$375 - Fee for professional services charged by Customs Broker
$400 - Professional Pre-purchase Insection
$1300 to $2500 - Enclosed Transport from Rothesay, NB to suburban Detroit area. Wide variation between haulers and even between duplicate bids received from the same hauler.
$0 - Provincial Vehicle Tax The 13% PVT does not apply since this would have been a purchase from a private individual rather than a Dealership.
$100 - Transit Sticker. I would have to appear in person at the Services New Brunswick office at time of purchase to receive this sticker (add $1200 for air fare and lodging) or hire someone local to act as my Agent with Limited Powers of Attorney. Michigan allows the Seller to act as the Buyers Agent for sales to out-of-State parties but I could not confirm that New Brunswick allows the same - and the added risk.
A car in similar condition in Windsor, and maybe as far as Toronto, would be attractive since it would not require the costliest of these fees for me. Although Ontario may charge a vehicle tax for this type of transaction.
