Only you will know what size works for you and your family. We have friends with one of these (maybe not the hybrid version) and they seem to like it. Sounds like a reasonable vehicle to cross shop vs a MDX.
Have you looked at any of the european offerings, eg from Volvo? BMW? Audi? What about Porsche Cayenne? Oh wait you said you were leaning Asian... I'd definitely take the Lexus and MDX out for a test drive, and it sounds like if you are looking at MDX to try one with the SH-AWD. WRT CX9, Mazdas I find rust very quickly here, but maybe their higher end vehicles are better? I would consider that aspect if you live in the rust belt.
