I've used two different types. One is a matte finish plastic, the other is glass laminated onto an adhesive substrate. This latter type came with the phone, and I replaced it twice from Amazon for about $10 or less (for the pair). Here are the pros and cons:
Glass: retains look of the phone's screen; highly scratch resistant; easily cracked - if you drop it, it's cracked. You can keep using it, if you don't mind the ghetto look.
Matte Plastic: seemed slightly easier to apply without getting bubbles or dust particles underneath; won't crack when you drop the phone; scratches if you look at it. I think if I could go back in time, I'd just let the phone's screen age gracefully, but if I bought another screen protector it would definitely be the glass type. What looks like the same brand I bought has a pair for the Pixel 2 for $11.
