I have one on mine. I also use a protective case. Phones are nicer without those things in terms of look and feel, but if you drop the phone or put keys in the same pocket by accident, the phone is probably going to get wrecked. My last phone I had a minimalist/cheap silicone style case and plastic film screen protector. The plastic film screen protectors have a pretty terrible feel and get bubbles/gouges. Eventually I dropped it and the cheapo case was not enough protection - screen cracked and the phone was unusable. Got a new phone because I was a year or so past the end of the contract anyway. For this one I have a stronger case (not Otter Box, I forget the brand, but more robust than average, just not quite as much so as otter box). Also I got a rigid screen protector - not sure if it is glass or plastic, but it feels like glass. I have a few scratches in it but the phone is fine. I have dropped it numerous times including on pavement and tile with no issues.
So for me it is worth it, just note that (like anything) some cheap products are not worth owning.
