If I understand you correctly, you are looking for a southern car replacement for the aero, but not a Saab? I'm a bit north of you and yeah, I would definitely consider sourcing from a place that doesn't rust out cars if we had one in Canada haha (maybe Alberta/Sask as they tend to sand more vs salt)...
If I was getting another saab, due to age, the south would be the only option imho unless you found a garage queen. I think sun damage is generally more repairable than rust.
But if you are getting another brand, I think researching the models and model years first is important. If you are looking 5 years old, cars are getting more complex and that may factor in also. Some brands are very tied to the dealer and may be questionable regarding keeping beyond warranty. So in that case, rust might not matter. More and more, cars are being built to be leased and disposed of.
In our case we are probably going down the road of ovlov and I now know what model years of what engines for what model cars will probably work best for us. That helps narrow down the search. But TBH, pricing is nuts for used cars still. I'm trying to wait it out as long as possible and of course maximize the use we get out of our daily driver Saabs. The only reason we'd get something newer is rust and long trips. Up here, being 5+ hours away from anyone who services Saabs regularly is now the norm unfortunately. They are awesome for within an hour of home, but a bit more of a roll of the dice on a long trip.
Fwiw, the Volvos do seem to be solid in terms of corrosion resistance. If you buy a southern car, it becomes a northern car after the first winter, so you still want to get a brand that holds up well in our climate. And, whatever you get, get it oil sprayed with something like rust check.
