I agree with a lot of your comments. I just rented the new C-class (240 sedan), so let me comment on that. The Benz is a great riding car, and handles well considering how comfortable it is. Also, the build quality is very apparent -- the car is rock solid. On the other hand, I don't think the car offers any improvement in ride or handling over the old C230 Kompressor, and it definitely doesn't seem as quick. (It would probably be excellent in the 6 spd. manual, though). In addition, while the new C looks great (i think), the interior controls have gotten even worse than they were in the last edition. I think MB could learn a lot from SAAB about ergonomics.
The real reason I brought up the Benz, however, is that you have suggested it is the same price as a SAAB. This is very misleading. Go to Carsdirect.com and price out a Benz with all the equipment you would want (and expect from a Benz). The price comes out MUCH higher than, say, a 9-3 SE -- especially with the current $5K incentive. A nicely equipped Benz (esp. w/the bigger engine) will run you near $40K. On the other hand, we all know how MB resale value compares to SAAB.
