Oil is cheap insurance. I was always taught that metal flakes off various parts of the engine during the breakin period, and that an oil change should be done at 500 or 1,000 miles to get rid of these small particles of metal in the engine oil, which if they stay in the oil will do damage to the engine. I know that some manufacturers now are urging no breakin oil changes, and regular oil change intervals of up to 10,000 miles, but if it were me, I would be a lot more comfortable changing the oil at the end of the breakin period (about 1,000 miles). Why risk engine damage just so the manufacturer can claim greater intervals between oil changes and thus lower service requirements?
