... the Swedish defence was specifically designed to resist any invasion attempt (although Sweden was/is neutral it was always assumed it would be the USSR) for 72 hours. It was thought that within three days the rest of the world (i.e. NATO) would intervene politically and possibly militarily - providing that the invasion had not already succeeded.
The SAAB 37 Viggen was the cornerstone of this defence strategy. One of it's major advantages was its ability to fly at low speeds; this made it possible for the Viggen to take off and land on a large number of road stretches all over the country. Thus, even if an attacking air force bombed all runways in the country the fighter jets were still operational - and you just can't bomb all the highways in Sweden, at least not in 72 hours.
The SAAB 39 Gripen is not stealthy, but as far as manoeuvrability is concerned it's pretty much state-of-the-art - or at least it was a few years back. Also, it's much smaller and lighter than the Viggen.
During the Cold War I think Swedish fighter pilots were among the best in the world, but defence cuts in the 90's has meant reduced training - and thus some of the best now make big bucks flying SAS airliners ...
