The electrical systems will all be changing to 42 volts. In Europe the systems will change completely to 42 volts, with Renault and Mercedes probably coming to market with the first systems. As it stands now, in the USA we will "phase in" 42 volt systems. This means that the basic electrical systems will be 42 volts, and the voltage will be stepped down for various accessories and devices back to 12 volts. Interesting to note: the starter and alternator become one unit under the proposed 42 volt system, and both are part of the flywheel assembly! Eventually the air cond compressor, the power steering pump, the water pump and anything that was previously engine driven will be driven by the electric system. This is being done to eliminate the "parasitic loads" on the engine. Elimination of parasitic loads enable better performance and fuel economy from any engine. This change in voltage is taking place to accomodate the tremendous demands that are now and in the future being placed on vehicle electric systems.
