Dave, you don't get it - increasing the voltage is dead simple, and it does not require a bigger alternator. It's achieved by using different electronic controls. The higher voltage system uses _dramatically_ less power, like three times less per accessory. A radiator cooling fan that draws 6 amps at 14.5 volts will draw only 2 amps at 42 volts. The starter has, by far, the biggest amp load in a car, but it is supplied by the battery, not the alternator. Even a higher voltage starter will be an improvement, and the battery can be smaller and lighter. A 42 volt alternator can supply plenty of power for the entire car, and be much more compact and lighter.
Most aircraft went to 28 volt systems many years ago for these very reasons. It's a good thing - 6 Volt systems are crap in comparison.
