not quite 14 years, 1991 I think is when Peugeout pulled out of the US as far as selling new cars, and they were the last French marque to be actively marketed in the US.
It just seems that none of the French cars ever really fit the American market. Maybe they are misunderstood likes saabs are, but IMO, it was the French manufacturers arrogance that kept them from marketing a car suitable to the american market. Items like a LeCar having a three bolt wheel pattern that meant you could get your tires changed or a flat fixed at about 4 tire shops in the US, that kind of thing.
Funny this has come up, because this week i've seen not one but TWO 405 Mi 16's, first i've seen in years, both were in pretty nice shape. I actually test drove one of these during one of my many visits to the Peugeout dealer during my 604 fiasco....*footnote* I ended up just giving that car away after it caught on fire and i could never get it *quite* right again...lol....gawd i hated that thing by that point.
Even on the dealers lot, the 405's were showing signs of sun damage, interior colors were fading and some of the dash was curling up. It was a great driving FWD sedan, and the 1.9L engine was pretty revvy, but the build quality was considerably behind just about anything else you could buy at the time. They should have held a protest.
