Iran would gladly take a piece of Afghanistan off Afghnistan's hands if this is the price to pay for their support. One piece in the east is of the same ethno-religious makeup as Iran. Iran has, over the last year, co-operated in stemming the tide of heroin from Afghnistan until it has basically dried up. Although there are muftis in Iran that hate the US, Iran is a democratic nation (a theocracy like Israel) which has many muftis who are pro-joining the west.
Pakistan is co-operating, as you will see from my posts.
Don't be too quick to throw all these babies out with the bathwater and assume, like a defeatist, that we have all these enemies. The enemy of somebody else's enemy could very well be your friend. Politics makes strange bedfellows. If there's something in it for the surrounding nations, then the surrounding nations will co-operate.
Caveats: Afghnistan has beaten the British Empire and the Soviet Empire (with the co-operation of the US). There is an insurgency underway against the Taliban already from the north. A charismatic named Masood is leading it although he is said to have been badly wounded and may be dead. Russia is making some of his activities, launched from Tajikistan, possible EVEN THOUGH MASOOD FOUGHT VICIOUSLY AND SUCCESSFULLY AGAINST THE RUSSIANS in the mid-late 80s. Masood's insurgency against the Taliban has been as successful as one can expect.
Although the west does not like what it has seen and heard about Chechnya, keep in mind that Osama Bin Laden has been funding the Chechnyan insurgency and that a Saudi-origin fundamentalist faction, the Wahhabis, hated by Chechnyan and Russian Moslems alike, are the root cause of all the trouble in Chechnya.
