Forget Afghanistan. Posted by EGD [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Take an Atlas, look at the area around Pakistan, Coolknight, Fri, 14 Sep 2001 05:30:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Invade Afghanistan? Forget it. The Soviets were a whole lot more ruthless on the population than we would ever be and they got their butts kicked. Bomb them? We'd just be re-arranging exisiting piles of rubble. Who'd notice after the noise and dust settled. IMHO, the real deal behind the atrocities of 9/11 are countries like Iran and Iraq that sponsor terror groups with training areas, intelligence, diplomatic cover, etc. Along with trying to kill Bin Laden and his ilk, The US should be planning a lightning strike to seize the oil fields in southern Iraq. The Kuwaitis and the Saudis probably wouldn't mind too much and we could set up an anti-Hussein regime in the south. We could also pump oil to pay off the multi-billion dollar insurance and compensation claims, and to rebuild lower Manhattan. Scuttling of the fields could be repaired in two years or less. And eventually, we could locate Saddam Hussein and hang him from a lamp post a la Mussolini. Retaliatory Iranian attacks on other states in the Gulf region would be difficult to handle as they'd disrupt the world's oil supply. We'd all have to tighten our belts a lot, park the SUVs, and take the bus (finally). Of course, unintended consequences always have their place in this scenario. Who really knows what would happen. Coup in Egypt? Lookout.
