The wind tunnel I worked in this summer installed a linksys wireless system to connect the ground floor control room computer to the computer in the overhead crane. The transfer rate is 10Mbps but steps down to 5Mbps automatically when the distance is at the outer limits. Our signal had to go thru some pretty thick layers of steel so the range comparison wouldn't be valid to compare to distances in a home or office. We had the highest transfer rate even going thru the steel groundboard most of the time. But even at the slow 5Mbps rate, the software program that we were running, PC anywhere, ran darn good. It's hard to guess but I'd say the maximum distance we moved the overhead crane was about 200 feet or so. They're coming out with a capability of installing wireless access points spaced apart so when you move around and one signal gets weak, it switches over to the nearest access point. Maybe they already have it. I found their access point/router on buy.com for something like $200. Then the pc card or usb antenna for desktops run about $100/ea
