Maybe I'm paranoiac, but for me it's a good thing to have a router doing some basic firewalling. NetMeeting, ICQ and other are *BAD*, they leave open security holes in your computer. That's why a good firewall is going to shut them off.

This said, the SMC or anyother firewall let you configure them to open the right port so it works, but by default it doesn't, for your protection.

I've been a home DSL user since 1998, not running a web server or anything, never with a static IP and always with a firewall installed. A basic DSL user, without anything remarquable about me. I kept all the logs send by my firewall since then, and it's frightening. You want some examples? Here is this month (only 19 days):
